How To Survive Affiliate Marketing…

Is it really possible to make $1,000 per day? Does (insert any internet guru’s name here) really make millions of dollars per year?

The answer to the first question is definitely YES. There are hundreds of internet entrepreneurs around the world making that kind of money and more each and every day. How much the “gurus” are making – I have  NO idea!

What I would like to discuss with you is the potential that is available to each of us during these ‘tough economic times’.

(I know, I’m sick of hearing that phrase too!)

One of the advantages of being an affiliate marketer is that you can actually change business plans with a few clicks of your mouse…for real.

Think about. If you’re promoting products that have a high end price tag; are thought of as luxury items, or “we could do without” items; and you’re realizing that your market is becoming harder and harder to sell to, then, Click, Click, Click…you change your product promotions to lesser expensive, more ‘have to have’, or ’I really want’,’ recession proof’ items that are attractive to a larger number of consumers.

In other words, if you’re promoting expensive one-of-a-kind custom made jewelry, imported food specialties, Indian spices, stock trading software, or rare KOI fish; your list of potential buyers has become ever-increasingly small.

Fewer buyers = fewer sales = less money!

Re-think the products that you’re promoting. Adapt; retool your business plan to include product(s) that have an interest to a wider range of potential buyers, i.e. less expensive, general interest products.

This doesn’t mean you need to scrap your existing business format. No, just put more of your time, energy and advertising money into those promotions that have a higher potential of producing sales right now. This is the beauty of having an internet business verses a brick and mortar business. Take advantage of your advantage!

Where do you find these little golden nuggets of products to sell?

During “tough economic times,” (there it is again!) we all tighten our personal finances belt and become much more price conscious shoppers…for everything! Consumers are extremely well educated and informed, i.e. The Great Google, iPhones. We crave self-help information products, ebooks and DIY software.

It’s so common now to see shoppers, standing in front of an item on a store shelf, scanning the UPC code with their iPhone, researching value and price?

Look to your own lifestyle and those around you. If you’re single look to families. Have a family? Look to singles, etc.

See where I am going?  If not, don’t worry.  Here’s a few examples for you:

-> Unless you’ve got a ton of expendable cash lying around you’re probably not interested in stock trading software right now. But you do intend on keeping up with the world stock markets: Lesser expensive software that will monitor the world markets for specific stocks, daily/weekly newsletters about world markets/specific products, etc.

-> There are a lot of people out of work or looking for another job: Resume writing. How to complete a job application, Online training courses for new careers, job upgrades, re-training, professional certifications, Employment911 has an affiliate program, etc.

-> Healthcare is expensive. Doctor visits and prescription drugs, co-pays for medical insurance each have increased: Home remedies, organic foods, natural health medicines, first aid training, etc.

-> Some are afraid of pending natural disasters: Packaged food products, disaster preparedness training info, safety items, and personal protection tools, clothing, etc.

-> We’ve all decided to spend less on our personal entertainment and vices: NetFlix has an affiliate program , TicketsNow has an affiliated program.

-> Gardens save money, provide family recreation, produce healthy, fresh vegetables: How about urban chicken raising? Each are great sub-products for both healthcare and entertainment, and have hundreds of unique sub-products of their own: Specialty seed catalogs, gardening tools, gloves, hats, clothing, How-To manuals, Care Of manuals, soil maintenance, organic gardening, pests and natural pest control, natural/organic fertilizers, recipes, etc.

-> Get right to the heart of every household; budgeting. We’re all watching our budgets and many of us could use some help: Simple budgeting software, household inventories, chores scheduling, income/expense management software, online payments, debt consolidation/reduction, bundling of telephones, TV, cable, satellite, online expenses, etc.

Gloom and doom is for those without a plan, remember. Don’t just sit idle and let your business falter while everyone watches the world markets.

US affiliate marketing spending will thus reach $4 billion by 2014 and will increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16% from 2009 through 2014 (U.S. Affiliate Marketing Forecast, 2009-2014).

The WWW is a phenomenal piece of technology that offers you endless business opportunities and is available to everyone with a computer, an idea, and a lot of energy.

As the old saying goes, ‘the world is your oyster’… you just have to look for the pearl!

And…that old online biz saying: Wash-Rinse-Repeat! … (Try it – Change it – Try it Again).

Not sure I agree about luxury items. The rich get richer whatever the economic climate. Champagne sales are at record levels.

If you can sell these people their luxuries you will never go broke.

Do Bolinger have an affiliate program?

You’re right Rich. During a poor economy vices, i.e. alcohol, etc. services/products all seem to increase. I guess its a good way to forget your poor financial situation! That being said though, the number of consumers making such purchases is FAR too few for affiliate marketers to survive. Our market is in the ‘general use’ categories.
