There is no doubt about the fact that emails have almost nudged out “snail mail” as the preferred medium of communication between individuals and for business purposes.
You can go as nuts as you want with images, sound and video in your emails or send them as attachments along with other documents.
Sending and receiving messages can be done at the drop of a hat. Yahoo,Gmail, Hotmail and a host of other service providers allow you to register a free mail account with tons of storage space with related chat and IM services, making them hugely popular with people.
Almost everyone has a free email account with one or more of these sites. This is really cool when you want to keep in touch with your buddies, but on a business level free email accounts are a no go.
Let me expain…
Business organizations view communications in a different kind of way. First, they want to know who they are dealing with and where the person is located. If you have a website, then you have a definite presence on the “interweb”.
Web hosting service providers usually allow you a mail server with “yourname.com” as the suffix at the end of an email address.
This gives you reputation, credibility and a standing especially in the online business world. Free email accounts never have this credibility since you can open and operate such free email accounts from anywhere in the world, even under assumed names.
The other advantages are higher security and privacy in business mails. Also, you can operate these accounts using an email client unlike having to long on to Gmail or Yahoomail.
You can easily save messages on your hard drive, send attachments or even include them in the mail.
Having your own custom domain name suffix for your email address and an email client helps you to design and send HTML newsletters with audio, video, graphics and text laid out in a pleasing and cool looking format—a difficult task with webmail based free email accounts.
Freemail users can be tagged as “cheapos” (only because I was called that when I started) or as an individual, not a business organization and really just don’t impress.
A custom domain name in your email address also gives you a brand image, something that those free mail account will never give.
Free mail accounts are real susceptible to hacking and such mail service providers even pass on your email account to web marketers who don’t have respected business morals so you receive a lot of spam… unless you enjoy spam of course.
Not all professionals or business owners would like or can afford to have a custom domain name and a website.
But check this out…VPS servers and shared hosting costs have come down drastically and even if you do not choose to host a website, you can always register your domain and sign up for mail services and give a tremendous boost to your professional business image.
The small cost is easily recouped many times over in the increased business you will get as a result of registering your own domain.

Hey Ian.. great question!
Yes an no really. Open rates are more based off the copy of your subject line. Unfortunately that’s why some people use very spammy subject lines like “Your account has been upgraded…” You’re going to think “what account?!?” and open it up to find crap.
Most marketers use their first names in the “from name” anyway so who you know who it is right away. Your email isn’t usually seen until the subscriber is inside the email itself. But this is where the professionalism comes into play.
Seeing “yourname@gmail.com” won’t give as much confidence to your subscriber when it comes to you being an expert in your field as say Ian@iansawesomebuisness.com would. (I kinda like that domain name)
